A great city for casual tennis
Christchurch has two things going for it when it comes to free tennis: lots of parks and flat, easy-to-get-around streets. Add the city's big green spaces and rebuild-era investment in public facilities, and there are plenty of places to have a hit without paying a cent.
Free public courts here sit mostly in council parks and reserves, open to anyone who turns up with a racket.

Christchurch's free courts are spread through suburb parks across the city, from the inner suburbs out to the flatter eastern and northern areas. Dedicated tennis courts in public reserves are your best bet for a proper game, while some parks have multi-use courts shared with basketball or netball.
A locked gate or club key-card box means a court is members-only. An open, unmarked court in a public park is almost always free to use.

Timing your visit
Christchurch courts are quietest on weekday mornings and outside school holidays. Summer weekend afternoons are the busiest, so if you want a guaranteed court, go early.
The city's climate helps here. Dry, settled spells are common, and the flat terrain means cycling to a court with your racket on your back is genuinely easy.
Watch the cold and the wind
Christchurch gets crisp mornings and the occasional strong nor'wester. Cold isn't a dealbreaker, and you'll warm up fast once you're moving, but frosty mornings can leave a slick surface, so let it thaw before playing hard.
