Seasonal reality

New Zealand's seasons aren't extreme, but they matter for tennis. Summer means long evenings and perfect conditions. Winter means short days and variable weather. Planning around the seasons makes tennis more enjoyable.

Summer (December-February)

Peak tennis season. Days stretch late into the evening (dark around 8:30-9pm), temperatures are warm but not brutal, and courts are dry.

The catch is popularity. Everyone wants to play, and courts, especially good ones, fill up fast. Book ahead for weekend mornings. Weekday evenings are busy too.

Early morning works well in summer. You beat the heat, and courts are often available because everyone else is sleeping in. Late afternoon to evening is the sweet spot for conditions but hardest to book.

Autumn (March-May)

Underrated tennis season. Temperatures are mild, the summer crowds thin out, and booking is easier. Some of the best playing days of the year happen in autumn.

Days shorten noticeably by May, so plan accordingly. But March and April? Prime tennis time without the peak-season hassles.

Winter (June-August)

Outdoor tennis becomes unreliable. Shorter days (dark by 5:30pm), more rain, cooler temperatures. You can still play, since NZ winters aren't that harsh, but you need flexibility.

Indoor courts become essential. They're busier in winter because outdoor players migrate inside. Book ahead, especially for after-work slots.

Some players embrace outdoor winter tennis. Midday on a sunny winter day can be genuinely pleasant. You just can't count on it.

Spring (September-November)

Unpredictable. Classic "four seasons in one day" territory. Indoor backup plans are smart.

By November, things stabilise and outdoor tennis becomes reliable again. Spring is when court availability opens up as fair-weather players return gradually.

Daily timing

Early morning (6-9am): Courts are often free, conditions cool and usually calm. Not everyone's schedule allows it, but if yours does, mornings are excellent.

Midday: Quieter on weekdays (everyone's at work), busier on weekends. Summer midday can be hot.

After work (5-8pm): Most popular slot. Booking essential at popular venues. Great conditions in summer when daylight lasts.

Weekends: Busiest time, especially Saturday and Sunday mornings. Book days ahead for good courts.

Weather strategy

Check forecasts, but don't over-rely on them. NZ weather changes quickly. Morning forecasts for afternoon play are educated guesses.

Have backup plans. Know which indoor courts are nearby. Have a hitting partner who's flexible about rescheduling.

Wind matters as much as rain in many parts of NZ. Courts dry quickly after rain, but 40km/h gusts make tennis miserable. Check wind speeds, not just precipitation.

Browse courts near you and start booking the good times before everyone else does.
